From 1994 until 2004 I worked on the model S3300, very similar to the above. This very powerful "drum scanner" was capable to scan transparencies like slides or negatives as well as opaque originals like photos for example. The incredibly extensive and ingenious settings options combined with unrivaled hardware precision made this high tech scanner an essential tool.
In the same timeframe the TOPAZ flatbed scanner was an invaluable tool for simply outstanding results. Using the same software as the Chromapgraph S3900 and utilizing scanner-specific options this scanner was capable of scanning "3D objects". Have a watch for example - no photo was necessary, place the item in the scanner and get unparalleled quality results.
With an optical resolution of up to 6400 dpi x 9600 dpi and 48-bit color depth this is my current scanner. With it I am able to scan bulk objects (such as books), film, plain paper, slides, transparencies or even original oil paintings.
The experience gained from working with the other 2 scanners has proven to provide additional and very precious background knowledge.
Do you know much about scanning?
Since 1991 I have been scanning various originals using a wide variety of scanners. Based on my professional experience there is no doubt in my mind the finished results far exceed any picture taken by a smart phone or digital camera affordable to the general public.
The settings offered by highly specialized scanning software are much more superior than what's offered by smart phones.
• Try to take a photo of a slide...
• Try to reproduce a photo...
> Does it turn out as sharp as the original?
> Does it turn out with no reflections or differences in hue across the copy?
> Have you ever been really happy about a print originating from your smart phone?
The scanner I am using offers High Resolution Scanning with up to 6400dpi using the Epson MatrixCCD®.
Combined with improved color reproduction and implementing the us of ICC profiles the results are no match to prints originating from a smart phone.
